WEST TEXAS - John C. Skelton, one of nine Texas death row inmates freed by acquittals or case dismissals in the past 30 years, appears headed back to prison after a jury convicted him of threatening to kill a West Texas man in a $300,000 extortion scheme. U.S. District Judge Robert Junell could decide today whether Skelton, who is 77, must remain behind bars pending his Oct. 31 sentencing date.
