One of the inmates who sparked the longest prison hostage crisis in U.S. history asked for two cans of beer in the final hours of the standoff, a request that was granted by negotiators. Inmate Ricky Wassenaar was given the beer about three hours before he and Steven Coy released a female corrections officer, ending the ordeal at the state prison near Buckeye. "It was the final part of the negotiation to get that officer released," Arizona Department of Corrections spokeswoman Cam Hunter said without elaborating. One of the cans, a Heineken, could be seen in two photographs taken inside a prison watchtower where the standoff occurred. The inmates were given, in addition to the beer, three steaks, three baked potatoes and three sodas. The photos, released last Thursday by the department, show hundreds of multicolored pills stacked in brown boxes, which Hunter would not discuss. Also visible in the pictures: cigarettes, pizza boxes, playing cards and handcuffs. |
