| Offender given death sentence for killing officer |

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL - Another one of the men convicted of killing a Charlotte County corrections officer is sentenced to die. This morning a jury recommended Stephen Smith get the death penalty and the judge agreed. Last month, a jury found Smith guilty of killing corrections officer Darla Lathrem and inmate Charles Fuston during a botched escape attempt. Dwight Eaglin, the alleged ringleader of the escape plot, was sentenced to death in March. In a surprise move, the third person charged in this case, Michael Jones, accepted a plea deal from the state. But the judge turned it down. Jones planned to admit his guilt in exchange for a life sentence. This morning in court Jones told the judge he was hearing voices.
