| New jail, sales tax on ballot |

HAMILTON COUNTY, OH - The proposed sales tax increase to pay for a new jail and property tax reduction in Hamilton County is to run for half of the time originally planned. Commissioner Phil Heimlich and Pat DeWine say they will vote to place on the fall ballot a 10-year, quarter-cent sales tax increase. That's 10 years shorter than the plan Heimlich proposed in June - a plan fellow Republican DeWine balked at, saying 20 years was too long. "Commissioner DeWine has been diligent about shortening the time frame," said Heimlich, who is running for re-election. DeWine said he also will push for proposals to reduce the number of repeat offenders - such as more substance-abuse and alcohol treatment - and creating a criminal justice coordinating committee to address possible future jail overcrowding...Read more.
