DETROIT, MI - Gov. Jennifer Granholm has called for an independent review of the state's $190 million prison health care system. A Free Press investigation of the prison health care system has revealed that it is riddled with misdiagnoses, delayed or denied treatment and inadequate accommodations for people with disabilities. Russ Marlan, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Corrections, said the review would cover the entire $190 million prison healthcare system, including the state's $70 million a year contract with Missouri-based Correctional Medical Services Inc., and the additional $90 million a year the state spends on mental health services...Read more.
