| Women's jail construction progesses |

CHICOPEE, MA - Motorists using Center Street in Chicopee are noticing more progress on the construction of the $26.1 million women's jail, most visibly sections of the 35-by-40-foot wrap-around retaining wall. "That's the thing that's pretty evident from (Center Street) is the retaining wall that'll go up to the platform where the housing is," said Jay Ashe, Hampden County Correction Center superintendent. What motorists cannot see is the quick work construction crews are making to lift the precast concrete cell pods into place on the other side of the wall, Ashe said. The pods, weighing more than a ton each, are being lifted into place by crane.
