Prison officials were answering tough questions last Wednesday about how an inmate could escape custody. McGuire was an inmate of the state prison in Tecumseh, Neb. He escaped Tuesday morning while at the Johnson County Hospital in Tecumseh for a medical test. McGuire had little notice of his trip to the hospital, yet someone had left a gun for him in the facility. Prison Spokesman Steve King said McGuire, 54, asked the officers if he could use the restroom while he was at the Johnson County Hospital to undergo a CAT scan. The officers undid one of the shackles that was attached to McGuire's arm so he could use the restroom. McGuire returned from the restroom with a handgun. McGuire led the officers to a Corrections Department van and drove to the Plattsmouth area where he handcuffed the officers to a tree near U.S. Highway 75 and Beach Road. King said convicts are transported in hand and leg chains. McGuire's were removed for that trip to the restroom. McGuire emerged from the restroom with a gun. He later told the officers he held at gunpoint how he got a gun. "Apparently he indicated to them that he had a friend plant that there," said King. Corrections Officials said no one from the outside could've known exactly when McGuire was going in for medical treatment. "He doesn't know until we walked up to his cell that day at 8:30 that he's got to go for a CT scan. We do that to everybody," King said. "That weapon could've been there for a month just waiting for the time when he was going to be scheduled for a CT scan." The Department of Corrections is reviewing its procedures, including possible rules that officers will have to examine every nook and cranny when prisoners are transported. |
