| Prison has more inmates than beds |

CONCORD, NC - Dozens of inmates at the Cabarrus County Jail were transferred some 200 miles away this week to bring down a swelling jail population. Chief Deputy Paul Hunt said he couldn't pinpoint a reason for the increase to 250 inmates, other than arrests, inmates unable to post bond and scheduled court appearances. Jailers began shuttling 40 inmates to Northampton County near the Virginia border this week.
