The state senate approved a bill last week that would restrict the sale of furniture made by Indiana prisoners to government agencies only. Supporters of the bill say furniture companies were having to compete with furniture made by inmates who are paid less than other workers. Most of Indiana's 37 inmates who make furniture as part of a state job skills training program get paid between $5.15 and $9.63 an hour. But some earn just 35 cents to 55 cents per hour. Senator Robert Jackman says workers in the private sector earn upward of $12.50 an hour. Opponents of the bill say the prisoners need the job training experience so they don't end up back in prison. The bill passed 41-to-8. |
