| Prisoner backlog erased at jails |

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Alabama on Tuesday eliminated the backlog of state prisoners being held in county jails, beating by one week a deadline set by a state judge in a long-running lawsuit, Gov. Bob Riley announced. Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale praised the state but called for diligence, saying the prisons remain just one day away from falling out of compliance with the court's order. "They have got to stay on top of it," Hale said. In fact, the state has whittled away at the backlog before.
