| Hostage Takers Used Homemade Knives |

We're getting a look at the homemade knives used by two inmates during the prison standoff in Buckeye. Corrections officials released a picture of the shanks, which appear to be long pieces of metal with one end bent and taped to make a handle. The Corrections department says inmates Ricky Wassenaar and Steven Coy used the shanks to take two officers hostage on January 18. The two inmates eventually released both officers before surrendering Feb. 1. Wassenaar says the standoff started as an escape attempt that went bad. Wassenaar's sister says her brother and Coy had been planning their escape for three years. |
