| Sheriff's report: jail costs adding up |

JONSON COUNTY, IA - Right now, it is cheaper to house overflow inmates in other counties than to provide additional jail beds in Johnson County, a study released Wednesday by the sheriff's office showed. However, costs for managing jail overflow are approaching the break-even point and are expected to more than double in four years, the report stated. "It's a question that's been asked many, many times, and I felt we needed to answer it," Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said. "I'm hoping that this will spur some debate and get people talking about the jail again." The study, done by John Neff, a retired UI professor of astronomy with specialty in data analysis, shows it cost about $449,000 in fiscal year 2006 to house prisoners in other county jails.
