Bristol County (Mass.) Sheriff Tom Hodgson -- the man who brought chain gangs back to Massachusetts -- is now floating another potentially controversial idea. Hodgson said he'd like to create a "Prisoner Peace Corps" that would send inmates to work in places like Afghanistan. He said the voluntary program would provide inmates with a "life-changing experience" by allowing them to help rebuild war-torn countries and witness the devastating impact of war on children. Prisoners who participate could get time taken off their sentences. Hodgson told The Standard-Times of New Bedford that he has discussed the idea with Bush administration officials, but he said he realizes there are numerous obstacles to overcome before it could ever happen. |
