Assembly sacks prison plan

SACRAMENTO, CA - The state Assembly delivered a death sentence Thursday night to legislation that would have transformed the old Stockton women's prison into a short-term men's facility.

The bill, which is part of a larger prison reform package, had cleared state Senate 21-11 Wednesday afternoon, but a hail of criticism from all sides of the political spectrum killed the legislation in the Assembly.

This means the shuttered Northern California Women's Facility will - for now - remain as a training facility for prison officers. Read more.
