Former jailer aquitted in death

ABINGDON, VA - A federal jury in Abingdon has acquitted a former Buchanan County jailer who was accused of lying about a female inmate's death.

After deliberating five hours yesterday, the jury found 38-year-old David Hicks not guilty of five charges of perjury and two counts of obstruction of justice. Prosecutors said Hicks lied about the facts surrounding the death of Tina Stiltner because he feared repercussions about an inmate dying on his watch.

Stiltner died in January 2002 in the Buchanan County Jail after she was arrested on charges of child endangerment and driving under the influence of drugs. Stiltner was found unresponsive in her cell that afternoon and was pronounced dead at a hospital. Read more.
