| Sheriff: closing jail would hurt jobs |

PORTSMOUTH, VA - Nobody at City Hall these days is saying they want to shut down the jail, but Sheriff Bill Watson has launched a preemptive strike in case the subject comes up again. Watson, in office since January, has argued to keep the City Jail rather than shift inmates to Hampton Roads Regional Jail, also in Portsmouth. Closing the City Jail and moving inmates from one jail to the other was debated two years ago, but the anticipated costs killed the idea. "At this point, the jail is not on the radar as far as the council's priorities," City Councilman Doug Smith said. Read more.
