| Nebraska Escapee Caught After Gunfight |

An escaped convict who overpowered two prison officers last week exchanged gunfire with police on busy street before being captured at a coffeehouse, police said. No one was hurt. Police said they found Michael McGuire on Saturday after getting a tip from a man who said the inmate had kept him trapped in his apartment for three days since his escape last Tuesday. Shots were exchanged in the street over about a block before McGuire ran into Mojo's Coffeehouse, where at least one more shot was fired, Omaha police Captain Michael Butera said. McGuire, who was serving time at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution on robbery, kidnapping and rape convictions, escaped last Tuesday during a visit to a hospital. Authorities believe two guns were planted in a restroom for McGuire, who used one of the weapons to take two prison officers hostage, authorities said. After freeing himself from shackles, McGuire forced one of the officers to drive a state prison van to the Plattsmouth area. There, McGuire handcuffed the officers to a tree and fled. The van was later found abandoned in downtown Omaha. Authorities were led to McGuire through a man who said the escaped inmate had held him against his will for the past three days, Butera said. He described a rental car that McGuire was driving that was later spotted by a Nebraska State Patrol investigator, police said. The investigator followed McGuire until police arrived, surrounding him on a street in central Omaha, police spokesman Dave Volenec said. Police would not say whether McGuire whether the shooting began before or after McGuire fled the car and ran to the coffeehouse. McGuire was being held Saturday at the Omaha Correction Center. |
