OAKDALE, IA - A new medical unit at the state prison in Oakdale is taking shape. The $26 million project at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center will provide medical services to inmates, space for special needs and behavioral disorder inmates, and a geriatric unit. Construction should be finished in March. Deputy Warden Greg Ort said a rise in inmate age is one of the reasons behind the new unit. He said as inmates get older, more medical services are needed. Ort said about 180 people, mostly medical and security personnel, are expected to staff the new unit. |
