CHILLICOTHE, MO - Two officers at a women's prison died Sunday in a shooting that authorities are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide. People witnessed the shooting, but no one other than the two officers was hurt, officials said. The shooting sent the prison, which houses about 525 minimum- to maximum-security female prisoners, into institutional lockdown. Inmates were confined to their living areas and weren't allowed to communicate with anyone outside the prison Sunday night. Officers had no trouble with prisoners in the hours immediately after the shooting, said Larry Crawford, director of the Missouri Department of Corrections. The shooting happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. outside a building that prisoners use as a library and classroom. The officers were pronounced dead at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe. Read more.
