About 20 inmates at Edmonton Institution in Alberta took over a section of the maximum-security prison for about six hours Saturday.
Officials said the disturbance was sparked by an inmate assault on an officer that sent him to hospital with bruises and abrasions, and escalated when a number of inmates refused to be locked up in their cells.
"A penitentiary environment is always a tense situation," said prison spokesman Gary Sears.
The prisoners obscured observation windows at their unit and also threw furniture against the cell doors.
"We immediately locked down the institution and called in our emergency response team so they were on site should we need to use them," said Sears.
"We entered into a negotiation process while we contained the disturbance on the unit."
About six hours after the disturbance started, Sears said things started winding down and prisoners started returning to their cells.
Sears said the inmates would then be checked to make sure they hadn't been injured.
There were no hostages taken during the disturbance. Sears said the injured officer would be kept in hospital for observation.
