| Investigation begins at youth prison |

AUSTIN, TX - Federal investigators planned to visit a South Texas youth prison on Tuesday as part of an ongoing probe into possible civil rights violations. The U.S. Department of Justice investigators were expected to observe and inspect the Evins Regional Juvenile Center in Edinburg, talk with youth who live there and question employees, said Tim Savoy, spokesman for the Texas Youth Commission. The Justice Department notified Gov. Rick Perry in June that it planned to look into the conditions of confinement and treatment of inmates at Evins. The federal investigation comes as the state Senate Criminal Justice Committee conducts its own investigation into confirmed reports of inmate abuse at Evins and a general rise in reports of abuse in other state juvenile centers. The commission said in a statement Monday that it views the Justice Department visit with "cooperation and hospitality." Savoy said commission administrators planned to be in Edinburg for the visit, which is scheduled to last four days. Read more.
