| Shakedown finds alcohol and weapons |

JACKSON COUNTY, MS - Shanks and hooch - two things that can cause problems for jailers and inmates - turned up in a shakedown at the Jackson County jail. Shanks are handmade weapons, such as the toothbrushes that deputies seized in the shakedown last week, said Sheriff Mike Byrd. The toothbrushes had nails stuck in them, he said. Hooch is homemade alcohol some of the inmates were making by saving pieces of fruit and putting it in plastic soda bottles so they could ferment. Officers found plenty of both, Byrd said. Shakedowns are a common practice in correctional facilities to uncover contraband, which is anything not approved or issued to inmates. It's to ensure the safety of jailers and inmates, Byrd said.
