CHILLICOTHE, MO - A murder-suicide involving two guards at a women's prison Sunday was probably a “crime of passion,” a coroner said Monday. Daniel Bunton, 35, shot Stacey Davis, 31, twice in the back with a handgun and then shot himself fatally in the chest at the Chillicothe Correctional Center, Livingston County Coroner J. Scott Lindley said at a prison news conference. Bunton and Davis, both of Brookfield, Mo., lived together, but their relationship had deteriorated, Lindley said. On Sunday afternoon, Bunton apparently got upset when Davis did not want to talk to him at the prison, Lindley said, based on information from a witness. Bunton shot Davis as she walked out of Building 3, which prison officials said is used as a library and classroom. He then turned the gun on himself, Lindley said. “It was all pretty rapid,” he said. The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. The victims were pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour later, he said. Chillicothe police and Livingston County sheriff's officers also responded to the scene. Read more. If link has expired, check the website of the article's original news source. |
