| Sheriff seeks raises for staff |

RUSSELL COUNTY, GA -The plight facing the Russell County Sheriff's Department really hit home with Sheriff Tommy Boswell a few weeks ago, when he had to advertise an opening for corrections officer at the state employment service's Opelika office. Because Phenix City no longer has an employment office, the department had to post job openings in Lee County. There the Russell County job notice, including pay, was posted next to a similar notice for the Lee County Sheriff's Department. The difference was stark. The beginning yearly salary for a corrections officer at the Russell County Jail is $17,603.27. The same position in Lee County starts at $25,259.66. "Why would anyone interested in that job choose to work here?" Boswell asked rhetorically. "That's not just a little bit -- that's a whole different ballgame going from $17,000 to $25,000." Across the board and at virtually every level, Russell County Sheriff's Department employees are paid significantly lower wages than employees in similar positions at neighboring law enforcement departments, including the Muscogee County Sheriff's Department.
