| Prison practices emergency drill |

BISMARCK, ND - Preventing escapes is just one job at the state penitentiary. There`s a lot more that needs to be done, and electricity is a necessity to make it work. Today the staff and technology systems were put to the test to see see if they could handle an emergency situation. The deputy warden says some staff were notified yesterday afternoon about the prison`s emergency drill. Others were told at 8:00 this morning, giving them a half an hour warning. He says the state pen does different drills each year, but this was the first time there was a complete power outage scenario. When the power was turned off, the cells were still locked. Even so, there`s still work to be done. "You get so used to running with the technology aiding you in your everyday business that you need to be reminded of what it`s like to be without it," says deputy warden Pat Branson. There are about 150 employees on the prison grounds. Nurses made sure inmates with medical conditions had their basic needs taken care of, all without any lights on.
