Two of the last three inmates involved in a nine-day hunger strike protesting their treatment at Florida State Prison ate Monday, and the holdout was transferred to a nearby prison, officials said.
Ronald Clark, 36, sentenced to death for a 1990 Duval County slaying, was transferred to Union Correctional Institution, about a mile away, so officials could monitor his medical condition, said Debra Buchanan, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman. Officials could seek a court order to force-feed him if he endangers his life.
The two other inmates involved in the hunger strike, Ricardo Gill and Michael Ritter, ate breakfast Monday, Buchanan said.
Eight inmates, all residents on the disciplinary wing at Florida State Prison, began their hunger strike on Feb. 1.
Christopher Michelson, 39, ended his strike Saturday night, the fifth to end his protest. One inmate's protest lasted less than two days, another completed four days and two completed five days.
Among the inmates' demands are more exercise time; availability of books, magazines and newspapers; the ability to visit with and make telephone calls to family and friends; more food; the ability to purchase shampoo, mouthwash and deodorant; and the issuing of warmer clothing in winter months.
Gill and Ritter have also been convicted of murder. Michelson is serving a 30-year term for second-degree murder.
The strikers are among 24 inmates on Q wing and are considered by the Department of Corrections as the worst of the worst prisoners. Their cells are directly above the state's execution chamber.
