DES MOINES, IA - A surging population of female convicts, fueled by the war on drugs, prompted the Iowa Board of Corrections Thursday to ask lawmakers for $30 million to construct prison space for an additional 300 female offenders. The space could be added at the existing women's prison in Mitchellville, or it could include construction of one or two minimum-security women's facilities in Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, said Iowa Corrections Director Gary Maynard. There is already a 50-bed women's community corrections facility on Des Moines' north side, adjacent to Broadlawns Medical Center, that has operated since 1993 with little notice by the public. "We know that we have a lot of women who are very low risk, and we don't have any other place to put them. A better place might be closer to the community," Maynard said. Read more.
