Three inmates at the El Paso County (Texas) Jail Annex on Tuesday were charged with manslaughter in the death of another inmate, sheriff's officials said. Oscar Martinez, 28, Alfred Milam and Octavio Casas, both 25, allegedly assaulted Jerome Doyle, 52, last month. Doyle was hospitalized Jan. 15 and died Feb. 2 at Thomason Hospital. "I hope God prevails and these three gentlemen who did this to my brother get the maximum they can get for taking my brother's life," Doyle's sister Joyce Doe said, her voice shaking with emotion. Sheriff's spokesman Rick Glancey said the men were not charged with murder because the death did not meet legal requirements for that crime. He said he didn't have details on the assault, on the cause of death or on whether the defendants were prison gang members. Doyle was an easygoing person who enjoyed working with his hands, and he worked for a sprinkler company, Doe said. He was jailed for a parole violation from a DWI case, she said. "He was the type of person to walk away from something; that's the irony behind all of this is," Doe said. "Jerome was taking up for another individual. He saw one of these gentlemen take another man's jumpsuit and he stood up for him," Doe said sheriff's investigators told her. Doyle was later attacked. At 9:21 a.m. Jan. 15, Doyle asked a jailer to be moved to a different tank but showed no signs of injuries, sheriff's officials said. At 11:15 a.m., a detention officer noticed Doyle was holding the right side of his head. Doyle then acknowledged he was in pain and had been assaulted. The El Paso branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has asked the Sheriff's Department to improve inmate safety since the attack on Doyle. |
