JESSUP, MD - Four inmates from the maximum-security Jessup Correctional Institution were recovering from stab wounds Saturday after a fight Friday night, the latest in a spate of violent incidents at Maryland prisons.

A union representative for Maryland corrections officers said the attacks show the continued dangers of short staffing, and state corrections officials said they are working to better manage a violent population.

The stabbings occurred about 9:20 p.m. in a recreation room where inmates were watching television and playing table tennis and board games, said Maj. Priscilla Doggett, spokeswoman for the correction division. Doggett said prison officials believe eight inmates, including the four who were injured, were involved. She said several handmade weapons were recovered. No one has been charged in the attacks. Read more.
