| UK COs poised for walk-out |

LONDON, ENGLAND - The Government was facing an all-out strike in UK jails in a dispute with prison officers over pay and overtime working. The Prison Officers Association (POA) said its national executive committee has voted to call a strike on Friday. The call came as the POA was due to appear in court on Tuesday for refusing to obey a High Court injunction obtained by the Prison Service. The injunction was intended to stop prison officers refusing to work overtime. The legal action followed a dispute at Winson Green jail in Birmingham where up to 20 officers were involved in a row over guarding prisoners who were on suicide watch. The POA maintained that officers at the jail had been ordered to work extra hours because of a shortage of staff. The union issued a circular earlier this month to its members advising them not to work outside their shifts. Read more.
