NEW YORK, NY - Bronx community groups are protesting the city's plans to build a new, $375 million jail in Hunts Point. The jail would hold 2000 beds, and is part of a long-term effort by the Department of Corrections to reduce capacity at Rikers Island by building jails in boroughs. The department says it wants inmates to be closer to families and the courts they have to regularly visit. But members of Community in Unity, a coalition of 15 Bronx groups, say the money for the jail should be going to area schools and job training. Read more.
