LONDON, ENGLAND - The threat of the first national strike by prison officers in almost 90 years has been called off following peace talks with the Government. Thousands of prison officers across the UK were due to walk out on Friday in a bitter row over pay and hours threatening disruption at the country's packed jails. But following two hours of talks between the Prison Officers' Association (POA) and Prisons Minister Gerry Sutcliffe, the action was called off. The Government had planned to take the union to court to prevent the walk-out but the legal moves have also ended. The POA had accused the Government of trying to interfere in the industry's pay review body and of forcing officers in some jails to work extra hours because of a shortage of staff. Read more.
