Overcrowding may have led to death

TUSCOLA COUNTY, OK -Tuscola County is dealing with a crowded jail situation, and the sheriff's department is also investigating the death of an inmate. The inmate was found unconscious in a cell last week, and later died at the hospital.

The female inmate was in the jail on prescription drug fraud charge, and investigators believe drugs smuggled into the jail may have killed her.

29-year-old Amy Skiles of Deford was allowed to leave the Tuscola County jail last Wednesday through a court order so she could keep a scheduled doctor's appointment. She returned to the jail a few hours later, and jail personnel checked on her at around ten that night.

Sheriff Kern says Skiles was found unconscious in that cell. An ambulance took her to Caro Community Hospital and then to Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw, where she died on Thursday. Investigators believe she may have smuggled drugs into the jail.

The case is similar to one in Bay County, where back in May, an inmate smuggled drugs into the jail and two other inmates died of a drug overdose. Kern says with tight budgets and crowded jails, it's difficult to prevent inmates from bringing drugs into the jail. Read more.
