BOULDER, CO - Colorado is expected to begin sending several hundred state prison inmates to Oklahoma when prisons here fill to capacity late next month. Although no contracts have been signed with a private prison operator in Oklahoma, between 200 and 300 Colorado inmates could be sent to a prison in Sayre, Okla., Department of Corrections officials said Monday. Up to 100 more could be sent monthly during the next 12 to 18 months while Colorado expands prisons to house its rising inmate population, state officials said. "I think that going out of state is inevitable," said Alison Morgan, head of Colorado's private prison monitoring team, who visited the Sayre prison and another in Hinton, Okla., last month. The Sayre prison is operated by Corrections Corp. of America, which also operates four private prisons in Colorado. "Basically we're out of beds by the end of October," said Colorado Department of Corrections spokesman Brent Parker. Read more.
