Runaway juveniles lead police on chase

Two juveniles escaped from a group home in Chesterfield County (Va..) early yesterday before stealing a van and leading authorities on a half-hour chase that crisscrossed localities, topped 100 miles-per-hour and ultimately ended in a collision on Interstate 95 near Colonial Heights, police said.
Despite triple-digit speeds, numerous changes of directions and collisions involving a police cruiser and a tractor-trailer, authorities reported no serious injuries in the incident.
The 30-minute police pursuit began at 9:30 a.m. in west Petersburg when authorities located a green van reported stolen from a group home in Chesterfield County. The occupants were two 17-year-old males who had escaped from the facility.
Police pursued the van north on Interstate 85 and ultimately onto I-95, again headed north. The runaway juveniles took a detour at Walthall before heading back onto I-95 north and exited again at Chester, but were cut off at West Hundred Road by Chesterfield County police.
The teens then switched directions and sped back south on I-95, again trying to lose police by detouring at Walthall before getting back on the interstate.
The high-speed chase finally ended about 10 a.m when the get-away van collided with a tractor-trailer and was left pinned against an interstate guard rail. The collision happened just north of Colonial Heights and led to the juveniles' capture, said Lt. S.L. Flaherty of the Petersburg Bureau of Police.
Aside from trading metal with a big rig, police said that the teens also sideswiped a Virginia State Police cruiser during their getaway. A gun was found in the vehicle they were driving, Flaherty said.
The duo was treated for minor injuries at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg yesterday and released.
Both have been charged with possession of a stolen auto and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Other charges reportedly could be pending, including attempted murder of a police officer for their collision with the Virginia State Police vehicle.
The juveniles eventually will be transferred to the Crater Juvenile Detention Center, police said.
