| Fighting increases as jail population swells |

MESA COUNTY, CO - In a flash, attempted murder suspect Samuel Lincoln, clad in his bright red jumpsuit, strode across his jail pod's day room and punched meth ringleader and fellow inmate Stephen Parsons in the face. Lincoln continued to pummel Parsons, also clad in a red jail jumpsuit, striking him in the face several more times and throwing Parsons into a wall, according to video captured by a jail surveillance camera. The June 25 fight left Parsons with a gash on his nose and cuts above his eyebrows requiring stitches, according to affidavits obtained by The Daily Sentinel. The two, who fought for nearly five minutes, only separated after two jail guards entered the room with their Tasers drawn. Top officials with the Mesa County Sheriff's Department said this scuffle was indicative of the problems the jail has faced over the past year as its population shifted from less serious, misdemeanor offenders to the more dangerous, felony arrestees.
