| New jail could cost $80M, judge warns |

PONTIAC, MI - Oakland County commissioners may have to consider spending money to expand or build a new jail, circuit court Chief Judge Wendy Potts is warning. Building a new jail could cost as much as $80 million, the county has estimated. "There is a small but vocal minority among the district judges that a new jail is the only solution to jail overcrowding," Potts said in brief remarks to commissioners. County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said the county could probably manage the costs of bonds for such a project, but that operating costs would increase by $25 million to $30 million. Read more.
