ALBERTA, CANADA - Alberta's economic boom and aging workforce are being blamed for a "chronic" shortage of jail officers. Alberta Union of Provincial Employees president and long time corrections officer Dan MacLennan said yesterday the province's jails are unable to compete with other industries in hiring new workers. "They're having huge problems recruiting in Calgary, Red Deer, Peace River, Edmonton and everywhere else," he said. "In places like Peace River and Red Deer, the economy's just too hot. People just aren't applying.'' He also said not only are aging corrections workers retiring, but people who might normally be lured into filling those positions are taking the ones left by the high number of retiring police officers across the province.
