CAMBRIA COUNTY, PA - A Cambria County commissioner said police and prison employees did follow proper procedure during a prison standoff which left one inmate dead. Inmate Torone Dixon was killed after taking Corrections Officer Ross Morelli hostage Friday night. Sheriff Bob Kolar said the hostage situation began when officers and nurses entered a common room housing cell.

"When they went in to pass out the meds... Torone Dixon jumped one of the officers," Kolar said.

Officials said Dixon jumped on top of Morelli, punched him, took his handcuffs and cuffed Morelli. Kolar, who arrived minutes after the incident began, said Dixon also had a homemade knifelike weapon.

"It was made of a piece of metal apparently sharpened against a cement area with cloth wrapped around the top of it for a handle," Kolar said. Read more.
