LEXINGTON, KY - Federal investigators are looking into whether jail officers used excessive force on inmates at Lexington's jail, officials said yesterday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky and the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice said yesterday that they were conducting an investigation into possible civil rights violations at the Fayette County Detention Center, according to an FBI press release. The investigation focuses on "allegations of excessive force by jail personnel against inmates," the release said. But Mayor Teresa Isaac said yesterday that she believes that when the investigation is completed, jail staff will be cleared of any wrongdoing.
