Recruit's death prompts allegations of wrongdoing at N.J. DOC

Last October, a seemingly healthy 36-year-old man collapsed and died two weeks after beginning the Correction Officers Training Academy in Sea Girt. It was originally thought that Ivan Simmons died of a heart condition, but now his family is accusing the New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC) of wrongdoing.
Simmons' loved ones have filed a notice of claim against the DOC, saying Ivan's death was the result of either a hazing incident or a confrontation with an instructor. The family says an independent autopsy shows Ivan died from internal bleeding brought on by a punctured liver. According to the family attorney, blunt force caused the bleeding.
The DOC commissioner released a statement saying the case is currently under litigation and could not be discussed in detail. DOC officials maintain that the staff adheres to the highest professional standards at all times.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is looking into the matter.
