CRANSTON, RI - This month, two Rhode Island Department of Corrections officers were celebrated for their heroic off-duty actions.

CO Ralph Tundis came upon a driver having a seizure in a truck while driving down the New London Turnpike. Immediately, Tundis called 911 and waited with the driver until help arrived.

Officer James Leduc also acted heroically when he saw a vehicle crushed on the median on Route 295. Leduc rescued a female passenger from the smoking vehicle, and treated her severely injured mother for shock. He waited with the citizens until rescue personnel arrived, and assisted with first aid.

A.T. Wall II, the Director of the RI DOC, said each officer took noble actions to ensure public safety.

“Were it not for the off duty actions of these two officers, the outcome for three civilians in crisis might have been very different,” Director Wall said.

Both incidents occurred on August 24th, when the officers were returning home from working the same shift at the RIDOC Intake Service Center. Director Wall expressed gratitude and pride at the actions of the officers.

“They have both demonstrated their commitment to the high standards of conduct we expect from our employees,” Wall stated.
