BROOKLYN, NY - Authorities have stopped distributing meal utensils to certain prisoners held in jail cells at the Brooklyn and Bronx courthouses after police found a shiv fashioned from two plastic spoons in a Brooklyn holding cell. Prisoners being held while awaiting arraignment in those two courthouses -- those served meals by police rather than correction officers -- are now given food that does not require forks or spoons, said Deputy Commissioner Stephen Morello, a city Department of Correction spokesman. But the shiv, or knife, fashioned from two plastic spoons that police found recently has raised concerns among officers who routinely transport prisoners, because utensils are still being distributed in most of the rest of the city's jails.
