| Help Wanted: County short on deputies |

A nearly year-long recruiting effort by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department has yielded a significant reduction in vacancies for key positions such as deputy, corrections officer and dispatcher. However, the department still struggles more than other area law-enforcement agencies to attract and retain sworn personnel. Sheriff's officials say the recruiting drive, coupled with improved pay and benefits for sworn personnel, has allowed the department to winnow the number of vacancies from 39 at the end of 2005 to 20 today.
