Cumberland County's (N.C.) chief jailer was demoted after deputies mistakenly released an inmate for the fifth time since a new lockup opened about a year ago. Sheriff Moose Butler said last Tuesday he demoted Dan Ford from major to captain after jailers released John Darrell Fairley, 17, on Feb. 1. The inmate told jailers he was Keyon Maurice Fairley, a brother who was scheduled to be released. Lawmen caught John Fairley the next day. Butler said jailers failed to follow proper release procedure but did not elaborate. "When the man (jailer) signs to release a person with a picture in his pocket, it's easy to look at the picture and determine who the man (inmate) is," the sheriff said. Four jailers involved in the latest mistaken release were disciplined. Sgt. Albert Finn and jailer Christopher Godwin last Tuesday were suspended without pay for three days. Finn also was demoted. Lt. John Tyndall was suspended for three days and reassigned. Another employee, whose name was not disclosed, received a written reprimand. Butler reassigned Ford, 58, to a division responsible for courthouse security, managing the sheriff's fleet of vehicles and maintaining records. Ford was suspended for a week without pay Sept. 17. Between February 2003 and Ford's suspension, two inmates committed suicide within six weeks, two jailers were charged with providing contraband to inmates and having sex with two inmates, and at least two inmates were charged with possessing cocaine in jail. There is no timetable to hire a new chief jailer, Butler said. |
