Authorities suspended six prison officers after 49 inmates slipped through a bathroom wall of a Rio de Janeiro jail cell in an escape caught on a surveillance camera, police said last Monday. The prisoners escaped early last Sunday from the Polinter jail in downtown Rio. The cell held a total of 74 prisoners, but officers did not notice inmates were escaping until 49 had slipped through the hole, Police Chief Alvaro Lins told reporters. The officers have been suspended pending an investigation. So far, police have recaptured two of the prisoners and said that none of those who escaped was considered dangerous. Local media, however, said two major drug and arms traffickers were among those who escaped. Last month, a major drug trafficker walked out of the prison's front door, which authorities attributed to a processing error. In April, 25 prisoners escaped through another hole in a wall. At the time, officials blamed overcrowding for the escape. Polinter which was designed to hold 400 inmates currently houses nearly 3,000. |
