| Jail can't handle flu |

SAN MATEO, CA - Inmates and nearly anyone who comes into contact with the women's jail is guaranteed exposure in the event of a pandemic avian flu outbreak because of the dilapidated buildings, overcrowding, open-style living facilities and shortage of correctional health nurses, according to a civil grand jury report urging the county to become better prepared. The county needs to prioritize staffing and create a detailed plan for dealing with such an outbreak, the grand jury report suggested. However, the report concedes a fact that has long dogged the women's facility: the jail has “chronic overcrowding” and staff shortages that could create problems even during normal times. Read more.
