ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FL - Four padded cells equipped with video cameras should be ready to house mentally ill inmates at Escambia County Jail by the end of next week, jail officials said. The padded cells were prompted by the deaths of two Escambia County Jail inmates who were diagnosed with mental illness. The cells are in the jail infirmary, and the decision on whether to place an inmate in one of the cells will be made by the jail's medical staff, said Capt. Barbara Wertz, the jail's director.
