| Judge asked to help with crowding |

LOS ANGELES, CA - The American Civil Liberties Union asked a federal judge Wednesday to order the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to stop housing jail inmates in cramped rooms without beds. Accusing the department of creating "unspeakable conditions" at the downtown Inmate Reception Center, lawyers for the ACLU of Southern California said 30 to 40 inmates are being held in cells so small that they must take turns sleeping on the floor or on chairs or benches.
