Whether it's flushing a stash of drugs down the toilet just before a cell search or stashing shanks in a carved out crevice between two walls, inmates always seem to find a way to conceal their smuggled goods. But new technology might be able to help COs uncover the concealed contraband.WinTron Technologies has developed the CobraCAM III with DOCs in mind. The video-inspection unit is equipped with an LCD screen that is attached to a tiny camera. The camera is at the end of a flexible shaft, which can help those hard-to-reach places in corrections facilities. “The units we have out in corrections right now are getting great feedback,” says WinTron Technologies production manager Ron Breon. “We had originally created a CobraCAM before this, but realized we needed one just for DOCs and went back to the drawing board.”

After feedback from the PADOC, WinTron made their next version weigh less, and had it run on an internal battery that could not be broken apart should the device fall into the wrong hands. PADOC security coordinator Lt. James Zaccarelli says the Cobra is effective for corrections in both cost and concept. Every day we're learning new places to search with these cams,” he says. “This is a much more streamlined version of the original CobraCAM and they really adapted to the needs of corrections.” So far, DOC officials report finding contraband in places they never thought to look. Breon says one facility found two shanks hidden in a facility wall. The CobraCAM has also found contraband in drop ceilings, toilet pipes and heating ducts.  Two shanks found in DOC walls by CobraCAM. “The DOC had to break the wall down to get the shanks out,” Breon recalls. “When inmates are in prison all day, they've got all the time in the world to think of new places to hide things.” The CAM's other amenities could also enhance the effectiveness of the visual cell scan. Cobra records searches, tracking the date and time of each search, along with footage of what was found. This comes in handy when officials try to prosecute offenders who continue to hide banned goods. “There are two versions of the CobraCAM,” says Breon. “We offer it in standard and waterproof, which is good for officials searching outdoors.” The camera's infrared lighting, which Zaccarelli says helps with night searches is a big hit with the corrections crowd. “DOCs can check cell blocks and it's kind of like a flashlight that gives off no light. They can see 10 to 15 feet in total darkness once that infrared kicks in,” Breon explains. A regular CobraCAM III, which comes with a standard 5.6” LCD screen, recording capabilities and infrared, costs about $1,795 while a waterproof Cobra goes for $1,995. “It is user friendly and easy to operate. There aren't any bells or whistles. It's just a quality product that has been developed for corrections and we're proud to offer it,” says Breon.
